I love how many different ways you can find to make homemade seed starter pots.
I’ve rounded up some of the best ideas on the internet to help you make seed starter pots for free, just from items around your house.
I know not everyone has excess or buys the same items, so hopefully with all the different items on this list, you will find one that works for you.
Homemade Seed Pots
Tamara at the Reid Homestead likes to use old milk jugs for starting seeds.
How she uses her milk jugs is pretty genius. She cuts everything just right so she can use the jug and create a mini greenhouse for her seedlings.
Not only is she repurposing something so she doesn't have to buy seed starting pots, but she also saves money on heat mats.
If you have Keurig, or know someone who does you can use the k-cups as little seedling pots.
My parents have a Keurig and I know how quickly K-cups can pile up.
Not only can you use the k-cups as seedling containers, but the left over coffee grounds in the cups are a great nutritional boost for your plants.
I don't buy rotisserie chicken often, but when I do I buy several of them to make a lot of meals at once. It turns out, these containers are perfect for creating a little greenhouse for seed starting.
This is another great way of making it so you don't need heat mats and a quick and easy way to reuse something for your seedling container.
Another great food container to use for seed starting containers are plastic food containers such as ones you get from store bought strawberries.
Egg cartons are another great item to repurpose for seedlings.
You don't need to drill any holes in them and they are easy to just add some soil to and then put your seeds in.
Dixie cups are super cheat and you can find them at just about any grocery or convenience store. Better yet, you can save them when kids are using them each night for their nightly water.
Using yogurt containers is something we used to use all the time. It seems like there is always a never ending supply of them around our place. Check out how About a Mom uses her yogurt containers as seed starters.
Newspapers make an excellent pot. I know not nearly as many people get newspapers anymore, but I know we still receive a weekly community paper and same with everyone in our community. If your community is the same, you can easily save those papers each week and then have an endless supply of pots.
Have you tried using egg shells for as your seed starter medium yet?
If you haven't, make sure to try it out this year. You can plant the eggshell (after squeezing/cracking it) with the seedling right into your garden.
I hope you found some great ways to make homemade seed pots AND save money doing so! If you have a favorite homemade seed pot that you didn’t see in this post, let me know in the comments.
